Abstract A total of 450 older adults were surveyed using the Zimbardo time perspective inventory (ZTPI). Psychometric characteristics of the full scale (ZTPI-56) and 10 shortened scales were checked. The results showed that the shortened version of the 15-item scale (ZTPI-15) had the best structural validity. ZTPI-56 had higher internal consistency reliability than ZTPI-15. Compared with ZTPI-56, ZTPI-15 was more correlated with depression and loneliness. The results suggest that ZTPI-15 can be used to investigate the correlation between time perspective and other psychological variables (such as depression and anxiety) in the Chinese elderly, and further revision of some dimensions of ZTPI-15 is needed in the future to increase its internal consistency reliability.
