Abstract The etiology of autism spectrum disorder （ASD） has not yet been clearly identified, and the diagnosis of ASD is also based on behavioral observations. Due to the characteristics of non-invasive, comfort, portability, and availability in naturalistic settings, functional near-infrared spectroscopy （fNIRS） has great advantages for the study of autistic children. The abnormal brain function of autism in fNIRS research mainly manifested in three aspects： Abnormal brain function lateralization, abnormal brain function connection and abnormal inter-brain synchronization. The future research can be further play to the advantages of fNIRS to further study the characters and influence factors of brain dysfunction in ASD individuals, and to develop more predictive classification algorithms based on fNIRS for early diagnosis of autism, and to apply neuro-feedback based on fNIRS to intervene in autism.
