Abstract In order to investigate the relationship between filial piety expectation and subjective well-being of the elderly, and to explore the possible mediating role of control strategies and child support. 225 elderly people in Chengdu were selected for a questionnaire survey using convenient sampling method. The results showed that filial expectation significantly positively predicted subjective well-being. The selective primary and secondary control strategies played a complete mediating role between filial expectation and subjective well-being, respectively. Selective primary and secondary control strategies and intergenerational support played a chain mediating role between filial expectation and subjective well-being, respectively.
