Abstract Exploitative leadership has a long history in the workplace, but its theoretical research has just started. Based on affective events theory, this paper discussed the influence mechanism of exploitative leadership on employee complaints and turnover intention. The empirical results showed that exploitative leadership had a significant positive influence on employee complaints and turnover intention, and negative emotions had a partial mediating effect. Traditionality had a negative moderating effect between exploitative leadership and negative emotions, and exploitative leadership has more indirect effect on employee complaints and turnover intention for low traditionality individuals.
