Abstract To explore the mental health of college students, this study aimed to identify the relationships between objective family socioeconomic status level (family SES) and depression based on the theory of Social Class Culture Cycles model, and also explored the role covitality and career decision-making played in the relationship between family SES and depression. The study investigated the objective family SES, covitality, career decision-making level and depression level among 697 college students. The results showed that: (1) Covitality and career decision-making played significant mediating role between objective family SES and depression respectively; (2) Covitality and career decision-making played a chain-mediated role between objective family SES and depression. This study not only explored the influencing factors of college students’ mental health and its mechanisms, but also explored the causes of depression from the perspective of career decision-making in a pioneering way, which provides theoretical references for the development of students’ mental health and the construction of educational practice activities in campus environment.
