Abstract Based on Beck’ s cognitive theory of depression and social cognitive theory of social class, this study constructed a moderated mediation model to investigate the relationship between dormitory exclusion and depression in college students, and the mediating effect of sense of adequacy and the moderating effect of family socioeconomic status. A sample of 608 college students from two comprehensive universities in Hubei and Henan province were recruited to complete questionnaires. Results indicated that: (1) Dormitory exclusion could positively predict depression in college students. (2) Sense of adequacy partially mediated this association. (3) This mediating effect was moderated by family socioeconomic status. Specifically, compared to the individuals with high family socioeconomic status, the indirect effect was stronger for college students with low family socioeconomic status. These findings highlight the importance of both dormitory exclusion and sense of adequacy when considering the prevention and intervention of depression in college students.
