| The mediating role of suicidal ideation between depression severity and cerebral blood flow changes in college students: Evidence from fNIRS |

Abstract To investigate the mediating effect of suicidal ideation on depression and cerebral hemodynamic changes, 92 college students completed the hospital anxiety and depression scale and the suicidal ideation scale, and then functional near-infrared brain imaging was used to detect the changes of cerebral blood flow in the participants during the verbal fluency task. Results showed that the mean oxygenated hemoglobin in left supplementary motor area of depressed college students was significantly lower than that in healthy group. Suicidal ideation played a complete mediating role between the depression and the mean oxygenated hemoglobin concentration in channel 52 of the supplementary motor area. The results showed that the prefrontal lobe of depressed college students has functional impairment, and depression can affect the changes of cerebral blood flow in the prefrontal lobe through suicidal ideation, which suggested that suicidal ideation should be paid attention to in treatment of depression.
