Abstract Investigating the impact of poverty on an individual’s brain structure and function not only contributes to a deeper understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying poverty psychology but also holds potential policy value and practical applications. Research has revealed that poverty disrupts neural development by depriving the brain of essential stimuli and increasing exposure to negative information. Consequently, this alteration affects the plasticity of brain regions associated with fundamental cognitive, emotional, and executive functions, thereby giving rise to psychological and behavioral patterns that hinder individuals in overcoming poverty. When applying the findings of cognitive neuroscience research to specific psychological poverty alleviation practices, it is crucial to approach with caution and open-mindedness, considering their explanatory role in existing intervention policies and maximizing their potential implications for future poverty interventions.
