Abstract To explore the mediating role of achievement motives on the relationship between extraversion and subjective vitality, NEO-Five Factor Inventory, Achievement Motive Scale and Subjective Vitality Scale were used to survey 991 college students. The gender differences of the effect were also examined. Results indicated that: (1) Achievement motives partially mediated the relationship between extraversion and subjective vitality. (2) There were significant gender differences in the mediating effect of achievement motives, namely, the mediating effect of hope of success between extraversion and subjective vitality was significant in the male group. In contrast, the indirect effect of fear of failure was significant in the female group. These findings contribute to understanding how extraversion affects the subjective vitality of college students and provide new insights into the development of undergraduates' mental health from the perspective of achievement motivation.
